Family Business Focuses on Service & QualityFamily
by Judy Aagard
Since 1967 it is estimated that my family, along with our faithful staff, have laundered over 650 million (650,000,000) diapers.

Tiny Tots Diaper Service has offered convenient home pick up and delivery of cotton diapers in the Bay Area of Northern California since 1939. In 1967, my parent’s, John & Linda purchased Tiny Tots. They were able to do this because of the willingness of my grandma to loan them $12,000 (the complete cost for the 80 customers, diapers, 2 Kenmore washers/dryers and delivery vehicle).

Dad and mom, along with my older brother, Larry, and sister, Sherry, worked long hours and my dad had a second job. I was 8 at the time so wasn’t as aware of the day to day struggles of trying to manage a small business and pay the bills, etc. From my 8-year old perspective counting soiled diapers, folding clean ones, delivering diapers, washing them, and talking to customers on the phone were all great adventures.

Customer service has always been a hallmark to the way our family ran Tiny Tots. Most evenings we would take a family outing making emergency diaper deliveries. In spite of fires and closed streets, we didn’t miss a delivery after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. We’ve always made every attempt to insure that our customers have diapers to use without running out. This tradition has become a part of the culture of Tiny Tots and continues on today.

In 1986 my husband, Tim (also active at Tiny Tots), and I had our first child, Trevor (the webmaster of tinytots.com) and I was frustrated to not find 100% cotton clothing to dress him in. In 1994 Tiny Tots Baby Boutique, a natural children’s clothing boutique was birthed. Initially the focus was on clothing and then we branched out into other baby related areas that we were passionate about. Supporting breastfeeding is my biggest personal passion. Because of the wonderful experience I had breastfeeding our two children, I had a desire to help others and became a lactation educator. Other passions include baby wearing and safe toys that engage a child and develop their imagination (we try to avoid selling anything that is plastic or needs batteries). Two of our staff have become car seat technicians (a 40 hour class). We are attempting to educate our circle of influence regarding the importance of proper car seat installation and use. We are concerned by the statistics that indicate that most car seats are not installed properly.

When my parents first bought the diaper service, pins and plastic pull-on pants were used exclusively . Pins have since given way to user friendly Snappi Clips and pull-on pants to endless diaper cover options with Velcro and snap closures made from a host of exotic materials and color options. We are in the modern cotton diaper era that includes more wonderful choices than ever. Our boutique works hard to keep diapering supplies stocked that are both functional and natural fiber based. We’ve become recognized as the premier diapering supply location in the United States. And our diaper service customers enjoy the distinction of having anything from our boutique or website delivered free of charge with their weekly diaper delivery.

Educational classes regarding diapering, baby wearing, potty training, car seat inspections and more are now available through our boutique. Baby showers can even be thrown at our place along with fundraising events.

We are grateful for our co-workers at Tiny Tots. We are convinced that we have the best crew possible. Their loyalty and willingness to put themselves in the position of serving others leaves us speechless. We are often overcome with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the provision of the individuals we work with.

Over the years, our family has experienced the pendulum swing several times regarding diapering preferences. However, there has consistently remained a niche of parents who desire to put their baby in a product that is comfortable, economical, earth-friendly and convenient to use. We remain grateful for our customers and although we know we are biased, think they may be some of the smartest parents on the planet.
